Introduction
Research done by Steri World® over a period of 14 years has culminated in the launch of a revolutionary wound dressing namely Chemspunge® Wound Dressings,  SeptiCure® Burn Dressings and Donor Aid Wound Dressings.
These patented products have evoked widespread reaction and interest.
Based on Trials it has become apparent that these products may be the Worlds First Wound Dressing that can be used for a wide range of applications e.g.  any type of septic wound,  non septic wounds,  leper and diabetic wounds.  Burns of any degree.

Two conditions appeared to be the major problems which either prevented healing or slowed the natural healing process,  namely oedema and infection.
Our research indicated that treatment of wounds, especially septic wounds,  should therefore be aimed at creating an environment less acceptable for bacterial growth.

Essentially oedema is lifted through osmotic pressure and raised to the wound surface to control inflammation and bacteria multiplication.
Oedema seems to form a barrier between the blood flow and wound exudate preventing granulation.
To achieve this, hydrophilic [moisture attracting] chemicals and devices such as hydrocolloid gels and sponges have been developed to absorb this moisture.
Unfortunately current devices of this nature have only been able to absorb these fluids physically,  which means that a point is reached where the absorbed fluid reaches an equilibrium and becomes available to the wound again,  thereby defeating the object of the exercise.

Our research led to the development of a range of products called Chemspunge® Wound Dressings which not only protects the wound from external infection,  reduces oedema and creates an environment which we believe is unsuitable for further bacterial growth.
It acts like a moisture-adsorbing chemical sponge and hence it's name.
When saturation point is reached a new dressing is simply applied which because of its integrated design takes only a few seconds to do.

Moisture in Equilibrium
In case of Hydrocolloid gels, moisture is in a physical state of equilibrium and can return to the wound from the gel.

Bad odours occur in some cases.

Chemspunge® Wound Dressings

Moisture moves in one direction only.
Chemspunge® Wound Dressings retains moisture irreversibly.
Once entrapped it cannot return to the wound.
An environment is thus created which is less suitable for bacterial growth and designed to promote a moist environment which favours healing.

Dressing must be changed only when saturated.   As granulation takes place after debridement, dressing changes vary from 2 to 7 days until healed.

Due to the adsorption capacity of the product it became apparent the product stimulates blood circulation to the affected area which enhances natural healing.
